In my non-fiction creative writing class, my professor always stressed the importance of INSIGHT. Our readers should be able to take something away from our writing – but we, the writers, must not hit the readers over the head with this nugget of knowledge. The readers should discover the insight for themselves.
During the same class period, this professor reminded us of the differences between the verbs “lie” (to tell an untruth), “lie” (to recline), and “lay” (to set something down). “You lay the insight out for the reader to find,” my class group joked.
“Little cookies,” one of my group members piped up out of nowhere, as he was wont to do.
…
“What?” the rest of us asked.
“You lay the insight out on the table for the reader to find. Like little cookies.”
Hence, the insight cookie was born.
